Pinterest Trends: Everything You Need to Know
If you want to grow your Pinterest account, it makes sense to work out what people are searching for on Pinterest and target your content accordingly. One way to do this is by using the free Pinterest Trends tool. This blog post will explain how to use Pinterest Trends to grow your traffic the easy way.
We all know that growing blog traffic using Pinterest is a long term game, and to get the most out of Pinterest you need to think of Pinterest as a search engine, not a social media platform. This means you need to do your keyword research and add keywords in when posting your pins – keywords are the way your pins will be found by your ideal audience.
So how does Pinterest Trends come into this?
Knowing what keywords are being searched for when can be a great basis for a Pinterest strategy. You don’t want to waste your time pinning things that aren’t relevant, or that won’t be have any searches for the next 11 months. Using Pinterest Trends can help you decide what to pin and when to grow your blog traffic with minimal effort! Bonus!
What is the Pinterest Trends tool?
Within Pinterest itself you have access to Pinterest Trends (under Analytics) or you can visit the Trends page on Pinterest. This is a really valuable tool when it comes to researching what is likely to be popular on Pinterest. Simply adding in a keyword to the search box will bring up the search history for that specific keyword so you can see how popular it is at certain times of year.
As an example, searches for “Halloween cake” start to increase in August and then grow until Halloween before dropping like a stone. Knowing this, you’ll know to start pinning your Halloween cake pins before the start of August and to not focus so much on them after Halloween is over (although there is nothing wrong with pinning past the holiday – it just means the pins will be circulating ready for next year!).
You can search for a few different keywords and compare how each one performs, so you can choose the most appropriate keywords at the best time.
Pinterest will also show you lots of information about the audience who are searching for those pins, so you can tailor your content to suit them. It will also show you the popular pins for that keyword, so you can research the kinds of images that attract attention and create your best pins ever.
Remember that Pinterest users are planners, so will start to research and plan an event waaaaaay before it happens.
How Do You See What Is Trending on Pinterest?
As well as using Pinterest Trends for keyword research, you can see which trends are popular across Pinterest at the minute. There is a section for “trends with high search volume within the last 30 days” and if you have any content that would fit in with those trends, you can make pins for it. For example, Spring Dessert Ideas has been receiving a lot of search enquiries so if you have any relevant recipes that you can add the keywords “Spring Dessert Ideas” to or that fall under that umbrella, get making pins and jump on that bandwagon! Now could be the time for those zingy lemon cheesecake recipe pins!
You can find out what’s trending on Pinterest by using the filters further down the screen. You can search by Trend Type (Top Yearly Trends, Top Monthly Trends, Growing Trends and Seasonal Trends). I recommend searching by Top Yearly Trends or Seasonal Trends to make sure you choose the best content at the best time.
You can specify Interests if you want to see the specific trends by Interest area.
You can search by keyword – this is really useful as combining this with Top Yearly Trends will a) give you a whole bunch of keywords you can use and b) show you how those keywords are performing compared with last year. Keywords with a monthly trend which is increasing are a good bet, as are those with a yearly trend. You can also see how well searched that keyword is. “Healthy dinner recipes” has a great search volume than “simple dinner recipes”, so if you choose “healthy dinner recipes” your content might take longer to rank but when it does it will get more traffic. “Simple dinner recipes” might not take as long but you won’t get as much traffic in the long run (unless the search volumes change of course!).
You can also search by Age and Gender if you need to.
Some accounts have access to an extra feature whereby you can see “Trends Your Audience Loves”. My audience isn’t big enough unfortunately but I have access in some client accounts, and basically you can see what else your audience is interested in.
Trends on Pinterest
Every year Pinterest releases it’s Pinterest Predicts Report, which is basically their way of looking into the future and saying what trends are emerging. Apparently around 8 out of 10 of their report predictions come true, which is pretty impressive! A part of me thinks they come true because Pinterest says they’ll be a trend and then people search for them as a consequence, but in any case, they are really useful and you can use this report to grow your blog traffic.
You can again use this to tailor your content. One of the trends of 2023 is “Wildflours” which Pinterest says “We all know someone who caught the baking bug in the past few years. But what was once a basic sourdough has blossomed into a full-blown edible artistic expression. Gen X and Millennial bakers are turning to nature to dress up their floury creations and embracing this bouquet baking trend.”
Searches for various keywords are up, including:
- Daisy cupcakes+85%
- Wildflower cupcakes+110%
- Herbal apothecary aesthetic+1025%
- Purple floral cake+85%
- Sage green cupcakes+210%
If you create recipes, you can create some floral inspired bakes, or a cake decorator could show tutorials on how to use dried flowers in cake decor.
Pinterest say that their predicted trends take off 20% faster than other platforms in their first six months. Pinterest is where people go to be inspired, so it’s no wonder really.
I hope this blog post has been useful for you!
