Is Your Blog Optimised for Pinterest?

Wondering how to optimise your blog for Pinterest? Optimising your blog for Pinterest will make it easier for readers to share your content onto Pinterest, which will then get you more traffic to your blog. It’s really simple to do, and is one way to use Pinterest to grow your blog and get more web traffic.

 

Here are 7 ways you can optimise your blog ready for some of that sweet Pinterest traffic. Here’s how:

1. Make sure your images are Pinterest friendly – choose high quality, inspirational images, ideally vertical. The ideal Pinterest image size is 1000 px x 1500 px but Pinterest will resize your images to fit.

 

2. Rename your image files to something including keywords. No-one will be searching for images called IMG4572 but they may be searching for “vintage kitchen styling ideas”. This is a great idea for Pinterest SEO and for Google SEO too as your images will come up in a Google image search if anyone searches for those things, so that’s a extra little win.

 

3. Add in pin images (like this one) to make it easier for people to share your blog posts.

 

4. Make it easy for people to share your posts. Make sure you have a social share plug in. I use jQuery Pin It Button for Images which is free. You can also use plugins such as TastyPins to hide other pin images, so when a user goes to pin an image they have a range to choose from. With TastyPins you can also pre-complete the pin title and pin description, meaning you can choose what keywords and wording are used when someone pins from your site.

5. Fill in your ALT text. Not only does this make your content more accessible for those using screen readers but Pinterest sometimes pulls this information in when someone pins your image. Add in relevant keywords but don't keyword stuff here. Remember, this is more for accessibility than SEO.

 

6. Add a Pinterest widget to the sidebar of your blog - mine's on the right of this post. Here is a guide on how to add a Pinterest widget to your website if you need some help.

 

7. Have a clear sales funnel in place. Pinterest is a top of funnel platform - it can get viewers to your site, but it's the job of your site or blog to convert those viewers into clients. Pinterest users are in active discovery mode, which means they're actively searching for inspiration or solutions but they may not act on it for a while (which is why they pin, to refer back to it later).
